I was taking apart my 700, and I'm trying to understand how these shift. My understanding is when you twist the shifter to the right, the "clips" under the big triangle, pushes this bushing toward the gear, inserting the "shift key" into the gear. But I'm lost after this. How does the key engage the gear?

With out the shift keys in the gear, the gear can jsut spin freely. When the key is inserted in the gear the gear locks up.

Yup, Yup, the keys lock the gear to the main shaft, which then turns the counter shaft.  That is why it is important to inspect the shift keys and the insice edges of the gears for rounding or chipping as this can cause it to "hop" out of gear.
