Hard hard is it to put a tachometer on the engine? im not sure how these things hook up. Does it hook up to the spark plugs or the shaft?

Most just clip a pickup wire to the plug wire...

well iwas thinking since the coil alternates between the two cylinders that if you hooked it to just one that it would as only half the rpms

I think you should try both cause i no the opposed twins don't pickup that good cause of its one coil set up I never tried 2 wires but with one it don't work all that great

What tach are you using...? some can be calibrated off one wire to give proper reading... some you need to isolate coil wires with a diode to get accurate reading...

Tach on my mower had perfect pick up it was very accurate, the reason it didn't work was because it was a piece of garbage tach. And I don't think I have ever seen a tach that hooks up to more than one spark pug wire. Because when a motor is revving 8000 rpm's and its a 2 cylinder it doesn't mean each cylinder is revving 4000 it means all cylinders are revving 8000 rpm's at least I'm pretty sure thats how it works correct me if I'm wrong.

Some tach's use what is called an inductive clamp (clips to the plug wire), some hook up to the negative side of the coil. My understanding is that all tach's are not compatible with small engines...for example, my Mac tools digital advance timing light has an inductive clamp, but is only for use on 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine, on my briggs flattie, it show twice the actual rpm of the engine...i.e. engine speed 1,000 rpm, tach/timing light indicates 2,000rpm. Dig around on ebay, and pick up a used digitron, easy to hook up, plus get cyl. head temp and exhaust temp all in one compact guage!

ya I tryed to use a snap-on timing gun on my motor
