Low profile tires...
« on: May 31, 2007, 01:59:04 pm »
I have a perplexing problem in that my machine is about 2-3 inches too high up in the air.I don't have the space to build a 2nd mower or the time between races to modify my mowchine. But a simple fix would be fine. I have 18X8.50-8 tires in the rear and typical lawn mower tires up front. One of our members is actually running go-cart wheels up front which lowers his a lot. I was thinking of going that route and using a low profile tire in the rear. That'd shave 2 inches at least. We're sort of running semi-outlaw so for now this fix would be fine. Anyone know of such a tire? This is a typical golf cart rim.

Try buggiesunlimited.com , they have every tire size, and from knobbies to slicks,
to even those lame spinners.

Turf masters 13 6.50/6 will bring your front end down because chances are they are 15" tires and for your backs you can go with a set of 16" tires and turf masters are all very low profile tires and the exact tire super George runs. And like 10 million other people.

thanks for the tips guys. I'm running a  18x8.50-8 now in the rear. That and the edge profile is rounded. So a more narrow, flatter surface tire would be better. I look at that site. And yes- I've seen some of those spinners. Can't believe people put them on cars let alone golf carts.

O.K. I have wheels on my golf cart too, but not spinners.  George has seen them, and wanted to steal them in Illinois, until he found out they were 10's.  (I guess I'll have to post pics of that too!)

Anyway, the difference between 18's and 16's is night and day.  I started in a outlaw group and all we ran was 18's.  Made the switch to USLMRA rules and 16" tires.   HOLD ON!  Get a 16x7.5x8 on a 8"x8" wheel,  that tire will be square.  Not that round 18 on a stock wheel.

Been there done that!  18's Suck!

Hey Paul,
Thanks for the heads up on that tire setup. Ya... these tires I'm running now are the bounciest things. That and they slide like crazy. Probably order something up next week and hopefully get them in time for the next race.

I know it's old but I am doing the same thing now... how much do you thing changing you rear to the 16x7.50x8 lowered the rear?  By looking at mine with 18x8.50x8 on the back and 15x6x6 on the front and mine looks to be sitting about 2-4 inches higher in the back with my new axle in the front.  Would they drop the rear that much you think?

Thanks!  Tom

Would it hurt to run a 15x6.50x8 on the back you think?  G-team has them but I wasn't sure if running same size on front and back would be a good idea...

If your going to run a 6.5 wide rear tire why not just go with 13x6.5x6 all the way around and be done with it. Sure would me lowering the mower easier.

Well I am on a limited budget right now and don't want to buy new rims right now since I have 8" rims on the rear.  I am trying to do what will make it safe and ARMA Sportsman legal which it is so far.  I just wanted to try to level it out a little because it has the old muscle car look a little bit, ya know!  Also, is it at all possible to get a brake set-up mounted on a transaxle with out using a 4 bold hub like Acme sells?  It looks tight but possible and was wondering if anyone had actually succeeded in doing it.

Thanks!

Dad made one for on a peerless 900 transaxle before.  He cut the brake disk out of a piece of 3/16 plate, then got a weld on hub like the ones you use to weld onto pullys with the key slot in them.  Then burnt a hole in the center of the disk the O.D. of the hub and welded the hub to the disk.  I think he just kept it in place on the axle usong shaft locks.

It worked fine, never had problem with it.  But now he has went to a kart type axle.

I bought a disc like this one , but my transaxle was 3/4" so I grinded the weld off and took the hub out, then went to tractor supply and got a 3/4" hub to fit it and welded it in
