My dads John Deere 210's 10hp Kohler has that same problem... it can't run without the choke pulled 80% of the way out. i would like to know what causes this too. Oh yea, and the carb on his Kohler isn't a float style.
Gotta love a good 'ol Briggs Flathead!

You have some orifice plugged in your carb. By keeping the choke partially closed, this increases velocity in the carb, in turn forcing the fuel to pass thru its ports. Yank the carb, pull the bowl....on the bowl retaining "BOLT" there are two small passages. I found it best to either soak it in carb cleaner or at least pull one strand of wire from a wire brush and use that to "FLOSS" the opening. Pull out your mixture screw (be sure to put it back in its original position "TURNS" when you reinstall it) and check the tip....if it looks worn, bent...ect...replace it!

I suggest you pick up a rebuild kit for your carb before just trying to clean it. You said you have cleaned it a couple times with no luck.....sounds like you could also be in the need for some replacement of seats, screws...ect.

CLEAN,CLEAN and make sure everything stays CLEAN when you reassemble the carb.

You could also be sucking in air from some where other than the opening on the carb witch would make the mixture wrong other than when on choke so make sure all of your gaskets are there and in good shape.

I know this topic died a while back, But i still wanted to let everyone know what happed because i have seen quite a few of topics where they did not let everyone how everything turned out and i did not want to start anther topic just to tell everyone how it turned out, Well i have this motor running good and revs good but i have it where it idles a little to fast because if i take it any lower of a idle it will run for about five minutes and after that it just sputters a few times and dies any idea as to what i might need to do or should i just leave it running a little fast??

Well i don't know but i will try to check that, But like i said when i bought it it had set a long time i rebuilt the crab and it runs like i told you, Now i don't know if it would make a differeace or not but it has not breather it did not have none of the breather stuff on it when i got it there is just the carb not even the plastic part to mount a breather, i know it is not burning any oil because i changed it and filled it up just after i got it and i have not had to add any at all.

your adjustments on the carb might be off a bit. which would let it run at higher idle and run fine even higher. try readjusting and bumping down the idle, you should be good after that.

use 1 and a half turns as your base line on the fuel mixture screw and if you blow smoke it is running to rich and also when you need more fuel only use eighth turns on the screw and adjust as neccessary
sit down, hold on, shut up

Well when i take one apart i usely have a base line of two turns and when i am adjusting i turn just a hair at a time, Also does anyone think i should try and find a better carb or do you think i am just a little bit off on this one???  But this is why i don't mess with tecumseh motors that much becuase if it had been a briggs i could have had it running fine in half an hour!!
