Whats your opinion?
« on: April 03, 2007, 02:20:31 pm »
What is your guys' opinion on pulleys, do you prefer
cast or machined, i know there is a difference in weight
but how about strength? I know some people like different
types, what do you think is the best?

I would prefer a billet aluminum one anyday...but $$$ sometimes prohibits that!

On the CAST ones...most are rated with a MAX. RPM so be careful and pick one right for your application.

It's true, they can explode, but I've never seen one do so. You'd have to be doing some MAJOR rpms on one to make that happen. Most, as mowman racer pointed out have ratings. So as long as you stay within those limits, you should be ok. The important part is to try and not nick or damage cast iron which can mis balance it and cause stress cracks than can later cause it to explode. Same theory as caring for a bench grinder wheel.

Billet aluminum would certainly be the best deal weight and strength wise, other than the cost..

My next choice would be a well made (and there are big differences) stamped and welded steel pulley over either a cast iron (heavy) or cast zinc (too light duty)

I have a hard time paying $300 to save 7 lbs on top, on a flywheel, and then clamping on a 4 lb+ cast pulley to the bottom...:noplease:

Just go with a machined or stamped pulley.  If your concerned about the stamped coming apart, drill a 4 hole cross pattern and put bolts through it.
