ribbed tires versus treaded tires.
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:58:20 pm »
Greg gave me an old set of ribbed tires for my front wheels. I was thinking that since the front wheels just bounce around a lot, ribbed tires might do a better job of helping direct the steering path. Any experiences using these? thanks.

Don't do it too hard too slipery the "ribs" are too shallow and they have no grip...

The whole design concept to them is to NOT have traction and cut or damage lawns... so you better believe they will have no useable traction on the track...

Think of a basketball all fully pumped up and hard...bounces around alot....What happens when it has less pressure ??? (not flat, just low and soft enough to absorb the jounce and rebound)?? 8)

good analogy with the basketball. I recall that my 55' mercury had ribbed tires and the steering handled very differently. Actually, it steered better. It has no power steering and with the ribbed tires, it seemed to have better directional control. But with the wheels bouncin' around on the mower, I guess that would be a whole nother' ball of wax. thanks for the thoughts gentlemen.

Go with tread tires! I had lent out my spare set of treaded front tires at about three races last year where I saw new guys come in and run there practice laps and were all over the place. After the feature I would get my spares back and the following race week end I would see the same guys with new treaded tires on their mowchines  :D
Go with tread to start and you will not be sorry!

The only time I ever saw someone use the ribbed tires was at an ice race, and he had about 250 sheet metal screws in each. They didn't bite at all, every other corner he was out in the snow!
