Hello from a hobo in sunny Slab City, the "lawless" paradise!
« on: February 01, 2020, 08:53:59 pm »
Howdy! I just got into building mowers recently, but I've had mower racing on my mind for a while. It seems like a fantastic low cost entry to racing, a lifelong dream of mine so I'm very excited to be involved in the sport.

I have a Craftsman LT II, with what I think to be a Briggs 14.5hp single OHV. I have a new carb on the way, hopefully it can get the old thing running again. It has some compression, I don't have a meter but when turned backwards the pulse out the intake feels strong.

I'm having a heck of a time ID'ing the exact code though. I can't find markings on the case at all, but it's covered in mud. Of anyone knows where I should wipe, let me know please!

My plan is to lengthen and widen the wheelbase. If anyone has tips on how to extend the axles in a spicer 4360 don't stay quiet! I'm thinking of buying some peerless axles and welding them to the spicer spider gears. - this will not be a legal build for right now, just for fun. I don't have a car to tow to any events, in fact I'm homeless right now, but I'll explain a bit further.

I'm in Slab City, a collection of homeless traveler communities that live in the middle of the desert, off grid. You might have seen it in the movie "into the wild". It's the perfect place for someone like me, a perpetual traveler to come and rest my hat for a bit, and tinker after not having access to tools or a workshop on the road. Scrap metal is plentiful here, and the mower I traded - get this - a gallon of milk for. The people are ingenious, innovative with the little that we have. I schmoozed my way into access to a welder and hand tools, so here I am tinkering!

I hope to get some kind of unofficial race going here eventually, there's a wide patch of compacted sand that would be perfect for an off-road race. As far as I know, there's no races in CA, and this is a plot of land where owners and liability isn't a concern

Anyway, that's my long winded intro! I'm very excited to have found this forum and it's absolute wealth of information. I'll do my best to contribute what I learn, and add to the great culture y'all have here

Huh, guess I'll have to think about making mine legal... Most mods I'm doing will be reversible
