70's YardMan Mock-Up
« on: November 07, 2018, 10:37:32 am »
Finally getting a start on this project.  I also found a guy not too far away who has a 3000ish sq. ft. gokart shop. He set me up with used rear axle assembly w/ everything I need on it, + Hyd. disc brake, 4 alum wheels and a junk frame with all of my bracketry and other usable components. I'm pretty excited to get on this project. Have a Peerless 700 series 5 spd in nearly new condition for this as well. Not entirely sure of power yet but I have some options. Also printed build rules, ordered tires. Kart guy said he'd help w/ front end / steering and that he has boxes of components I can paw through.
I really love the look of this machine:

Just curious whose build rules you are using?
USLMRA has to have 8" rear tires for prepared chassis

I have an ARMA rule set. IDK if I'll ever race this. 53 y.o. w/ arthritic back, shoulders... I probably shouldn't. I figured if I build it to a rule set it might be worth more for resale if I ever want to sell it. Also, I'm building on a tight budget so if I deviate from rule set in some aspects, a buyer may have to do some mods to get to pass.
I'm really just building this for fun, as I love having a garage project going. I'm in very rural area with a couple neighbors of same interest so it'll get used for sure.

Looking at the pics, I do not see bracing from front to rear on this yet.

Started bracing last night and added image to this album:
https://imgur.com/a/DekcN2k
The center cross member is temporary placed right now. I'm using 1"X1"x1/8" wall because that's what I have. The solid part of front axle is 1"x1.5"x1/8" wall for same reason. I can prob. get a piece of 1"x2"x1/8" wall for this if you think I should.
Was just browsing 2018 build rules from USLMRA and see that I'd need 8" rear rim.... I suppose at this point I can go backwards and set up for 8" rear wheels. I'd want to cut and raise fenders though or this machine is just going to be too high off the ground.
The way this pressed frame is laid out, the back half steps DOWN 1.5" lower than front half (you can kind of see this in 6th image down). Right now, the bottom of that step-down is 4.5" off the ground, w/ the 15" dia tires currently on it. If I change to 8" rims and 16" tires, that would put the lower frame portion 5" off the ground and the top of tires into the fenders. I can probably tweak fenders for 1/2" clearance w/ out much trouble.
My question to you is, Is the 5" rear frame clearance too much? Just forward of the lower rear frame, the "main frame" would now be 6.5" off the ground. It'd be nice if I could cut that lower part of rear frame off and raise the rear axle and fenders so I could have 4" - 4.5" rear ground clearance. Not allowable? What do you think? Any alternate suggestions? I really appreciate your input as I've never done this before.

So, I can either move these rear rims and tires (15x6-6) to the front or use what I now have for front 13x6.5-6. What do you think?

You can buzz that lip off flat all the way around, leave enough to bend a new lip that will be flat,
and weld the corner nothces back in.

Are you talking about the lower rear frame, or fenders? you can see in pic 7 that I scribed a line where I'd like to cut frame if allowable.

You need a better pic hosting site to show your pics. One you can link to.

So, if I get 8" dia wheels, should I get them in 8", 9", or 10" width - I'm assuming I'd be going with tire of 16x7.5-8.

Thank you!!!

8 x 8 will be good on those tires.

If there is a thumbnail version of those links, that is what we need.

Thanks birdman. So when you mention about cutting the lip are you talking about the bottom of rear frame "box"?

Yep, the line is right, but leave metal to turn out a new lip on the bottom.
It will be longer on the back. The lip will give strength without adding weight.

I understand perfectly. Thanks so much!

One last Q for today - Now my front tire / wheel options. I have on hand 13x6.5-6 and 15x6-6 tires. The 2 wheel sets I have are 6x6.5 and 6x8.

My guess - use the 6x6.5 wheels and the 13x6.5-6 tires on front?
