trans axle questions

Dirty Deeds:
Hey guys IM wanting to build a drift mower, not go race but just to have fun with and take to shows. I see alot of builds use just a single speed gear box with reverse, is the 4-6 speed trans axles from mowers not strong enough to handle 20-40hp or do most mower racing rules ban them?
