18.5 vanguard
« on: January 27, 2018, 12:17:36 pm »
I have an 18.5 vanguard that will not start. Plenty of spark and gas just will not hit. Spins very easy without plug but
I can stop it with my thumb over plug hole. Does the cam have a compression release stuck or is it something else. Would like to know before I tear into it.  Thanks

Could be a weak starter(there is a test for that), weak battery(detectable with a load test), or loose lash on valves as well. Rule those out first.

The compression release opens the intake valve slightly just prior to full opening.  Remove the valve cover.  If the intake doesn't move off the seat twice then your compression release is broken. Haven't seen or heard of one sticking.  Unfortunately the only alternative is to replace the camshaft.

Don't think it's the starter, know its not the battery. Will pull the top where I can put a wrench on the crank and turn slowly while watching the valves.
