33CI AVS HELP!
« on: June 26, 2017, 11:28:35 pm »
We put together a full blown race motor (cam, head, crank, EC carb and a billet flywheel) and I CAN NOT get it to start.  I have built numerous mower race engines without a problem but this is the first AVS race engine and I am having nothing but problems.  Have fuel-spark-air and compression, the starter will spin the engine and it will pop out the exhaust and through the carb.  Sounds like the timing is way off, flywheel has the AVS hub and is all the way negative.  Have to get a new degree wheel since I lost the one I had when we moved apparently.  Anyone think of anything I'm missing??  I have NEVER had a problem like this with any other engine I have built, I'm stumped..

Been a  while since I built one but the very first thing comes to mind would be the flywheel key. Pretty quick check if you just pull the bolt. Probably didn't get a good seat. I had problems until I  started using lapping.

Checked that already.  I looked at a bone stock 33 we have on a running GP and when that motor is at the top of the compression stroke the flywheel magnet is 2/3rds the way through the magneto.  My race engine the magnet on the billet wheel is nowhere close to getting to the magneto

Here are some pics I took.  The one is a running 33 AVS that is on a GP of ours.  Notice the location of the magnet on the flywheel and the flywheel key.  The other is my race motor, both at the top of the compression stroke.

Where is the timing mark on the hub?   Pics don't show it.

I don't remember the timing mark being in the same location as the puller holes.

Looks like to me if you look at the keyway and the magnet they are in the same spot on both engines, Where is the piston when you put both keyways in the same spot?

I'm wondering if that hub was marked wrong. take the bolts out and rotate the flywheel until it matches up with the stock one and see what happens.
