Briggs starter sticking in ARC flywheel ring gear
« on: May 20, 2017, 02:42:17 am »
Hi Guys,

I have rebuilt a Briggs 28 OHV, (older type with counterweight).
I have installed an ARC flywheel.
Using the original starter motor that came with the engine.
When the starter is engaged the starter gear sticks in the ring gear, and the motor doesn't turn any further.

Have tried shimming it out, this then strips the the starter teeth.

Can anyone help?

Them you likely installed too thick of a shim. You will need to use some pretty thin material and likely make your own, and find that "fine line" between where it engages smoothly and does not.

Thanks Ed,

Is this a common problem?

When you go to the billet wheel, you pretty much always have to mess with shims to get the starter drive clearance correct.
