ARC Flywheel Balance
« on: November 07, 2016, 12:19:08 pm »
So I am wondering how many of you are checking the balance of your ARC flywheels? I just had a mother internally balanced and the flywheel alone was 18g out of balance.

I have never seen a arc flywheel out, this is not to say anything is possible? I have had other things that made the assembly out such as welding on the pulley that attaches to the crank. Yours is off a little over half an ounce? not terrible in my world, the amount of overbalance can vary this much depending on the type of engine, easiest thing is just to balance the complete assembly from flywheel to crank pulley. Just my 2 cents.

Unless it has been altered since it left ARC, the flywheel is zero balanced, which means if you put an on-center shaft through it and place the shaft on top of parallel and level knife edges, it won't roll.

So this is how the flywheel was balanced. The hub was removed and it was spun up using a flywheel shaft that is used for vehicle flywheels. So the flywheel was cleaned and spotless before checking balance. This was a used flywheel that I had been running on the motor for a couple of years. I wanted to make sure everything was in spec before I ran the new motor since everything else was internally balanced.

Now I did have another flywheel from ARC that was for a Briggs and Stratton single that I had them check since the one was out and the balance was spot on.
