Exhaust Question
« on: March 03, 2007, 09:42:23 pm »
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I was wondering what exactly goes into making a new exhaust for a mower. Can a simple steel pipe that is bent do the trick? Im looking for that piped snowmobile sound on the mower or something that just sounds good pretty much. Also when a new exhaust is put on does the jetting need work? Motor is a 1980 Kohler K341 16HP. Thanks

Search and you WILL receive.

find a way around, or through to find a hole, some kind of break that
would allow some space. Once something broke thru, I could be there to
take advantage. Then I would finish 7th instead of 10th." - Dubba G

Actually....

It's gonna be hard to get a single cylinder, 4 stroke , 6000 rpm, lawnmower motor to sound like a multi cylinder, 2 stroke piped 9000 rpm snowmobile motor...

I don't care what kind of bent pipe you put on it...

Yeah that would be a little rough, I didnt know if there was a way or not. And Im not very computer smart, thanks for pointing out the search option on the page.

One more question that I couldnt find: As far as a lenghth of pipe (Im giving up on the snowmobile part, just wanna fool around now). What would be a guess for a length for my Kohler? Same as what the other guys said 12" - 15" ?

That would be a "minimal" length (per cylinder) to keep enough back pressure to torque up and keep from burning the valves...around 1" in diameter....

Then "suggest" another foot or so of 1 1/2" pipe (again as part of "flow" equation) and then flair it out with a length of 2"+ for a rumbley sound or cut it there for a raspy poppy sound...

A friend of mine actually made an expansion chamber fo his 5.5 hp Honda on his kart and said that it made a difference in power untill they banned it.
