Transaxle Lube
« on: June 19, 2016, 10:59:46 am »
What is the name of the gear lube that is a grease, but flows like oil when it warms up, supposedly doesn't leak. I have also read about mixing oil and grease. Any thoughts on this? Will be used in a Peerless 820-018.
Thanks

Tecumseh/Peerless used a lube called Bentonite. Good stuff. Still available at various small engine dealers. Bentonite liquifies at higher temps, but alone doesn't stick very well.

I've been running Bentonite for years in my 820's for years with a bit of STP mixed in. About 6 ounces of the sticky stuff will do.

Use it in any transaxle and you'll never have a lube related failure.

Bert I know you are not a fan of the700 but that would cure a lot of leak problems in that also, don't you think?

I'm not Bert, as I am in slightly better physical condition, but yes, it probably would.

Ed, you may be in better physical condition, but I'm way more handsome.

The Bentonite liquifies with heat, Al. So you may have a bit of leakage (like me when I watch Ed drive my stuff) at speed. But when cool, you won't have any puddles. Even with the STP added, the stuff hardens up.

The STP isn't there for lube. STP had a lot of tackifier, so it helps the Bentonite adhere to the gears of the box.

As soon as I read that that made perfect sense. Clever Bert if you have any more of these cool little tricks text them to me. (I'm going to need a truck for all the beer i'm going to owe you)

Still like to know if anyone has mixed a good quality high temp grease with 90wt. gear oil and had it work for them. Transaxle or RAGB

Go get a couple of tubes of corn head grease.  It does about the same thing as the bentonite grease, yet much nicer to work with.  Add gear oil if you wish.

Probably a little less expensive than Bentonite also. Thanks

THAT'S WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT. DON'T MIX COMMON WHEEL BEARING GREASE AND GEAR LUBE YOU WILL JUST GET A BIG MESS AND NOT IMPROVE OR HELP YOUR CAUSE. THE GREASE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IS DESIGNED FOR THIS KIND OF PURPOSE.

I sometimes mix a whole lot of awesome with a little bit of spectacular.
It lubricates quite well.
But, in the 820's, it's just bentonite and STP.

I put Bentonite on crackers and feed them to Ed. He thinks it's caviar.
