Briggs flat head
« on: January 04, 2016, 12:49:29 am »

Hi  I have a Briggs model 28.  I am using t G team racing dvds to trick out the engine and I was wondering what bearings you use for the crank shaft and cam shaft to sit on to rotate.  It was not mentioned in the dvds.   Any help is appreciated.
Thank you

Just to confirm, are you referring to the bearings or the whole build?

YES THAT'S WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. IF YOU DO DECIDE TO USE THEM CHANGE THEM ONCE A YEAR OR ON REBUILD. THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE AND EASY TO CHANGE.

I will try and get you a part number in the morning for the crank bearing.

I used them for years and never had issues.  Even ran them on both ends of the crank.

Just my 2 cents, Smokey Yunick (arguably one of the best engines builders of all time) once built a small block Chevy and used needle bearings through out the engine, he said it simply started easier and saw no performance gains. A plain bearing (rod or block type) has the greatest surface area of any type of bearing out there. It can withstand the biggest load. Just saying.

I CAN'T SEE IT HURTING ANYTHING. IF YOU PUT A CRANK IN THE OIL PAN AND SPIN IT THERE IS RESISTANCE, PUT THE BEARINGS BETWEEN THE PAN AND CRANK IT SPINS EASILY. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE YOU CAN FEEL, IT MAY NOT BE A LOT BUT LITTLE THINGS ADD UP. AT THE COST OF DOING IT WHY NOT!

From an engineers standpoint (because that's what I am)
The load isn't on the bearing itself but on the oil film on the bearing.
If the engine is designed for needle bearings, the journal diameters are increased to increase the surface area of the bearings.
A motor designed for a plain bearing will have more surface area for the oil film and not have any more friction than a needle bearing design.
Since the plain bearing has more surface area it will last longer than a motor that has been modified to accept the needle bearings.

I hope that this made sense...

HE IS TALKING BETWEEN THE CRANK AND THE PAN. THE BOTTOM OR HORIZONTAL PART OF THE CRANK TO THE HORIZONTAL PART OF THE PAN NOT THE VERTICAL SHAFT PART.

We have never had a problem with these bearings in our GTeam motors
