task force mower
« on: October 18, 2015, 02:02:57 pm »
Starting my first tear down on a task force mower. has a really good 12 horse briggs flat head but the rest is pretty rusty. The diff is a variable speed thing but I think I can weld it up and make a direct drive. Should I look for a different diff or go with this? Also since I don't have access to a set of torches do any of you use a MAP gas torch to heat medal, if so how does it work? Will it heat to a cherry red? Would like to know before I buy.
Thanks

Ok, I'll bite, I think the veiwers are being kind to you. You need a plan before embarking into this world of mower racing, most have evolved into someting far bigger than we were in the past. Todays mowers are super fast, competive and as you know, speed cost money.

Here is what I would do if I were you. Find a racing club near as possible, hang out with them, study the fastest racers, listen to them talking, find the winners and try to duplicate them. Once yu get to their level, then you can advance to make your stuff faster, don't reinvent the wheel.

The welding technique you refer to is gas welding, yes it will make the metal red hot, is it the best way weld, no. Find a friend who knows how to weld and learn. Mig welders are cheap and what I call an idiot welder, anyone can learn quickly.

Attend as many races as you can, figure what your budget, expertise, and skill level will allow you to run.

Lastly, good luck, we need new people racing and there is a wealth of information on here, pick through it.

What class are you building?

Your going to want a different transaxle or go with a peerless 700 and kart axle.

Would love to stagger up on a peerless as I have a complete rear axel setup, brakes gears and wheels with turf savers already on kart wheels. Thought I would get my feet wet this way first. I have a new 420 pred that I could jack shaft to the axel, may go that way. Still don't know what class to run as there is no club near me. Guy said I might go to kart track and enter run what you brung class. :woo: :woo:
Thanks so very much for the repily

Where are you located?   You may be suprised.

If you have the kart axle go with the transmission.

Well, in order for us to be able to give you valid and pertinent information and suggestions, we first need to know your intentions.  No need to play twenty questions if you state them up front.

If you let people know where you're from someone close by may chime in. I  would assume since you're looking at SOMA that would indicate the south? I haven't seen a club yet that wouldn't welcome new members.
