Help building 31 ci briggs single
« on: September 21, 2015, 01:02:27 am »
Hey guys just wanted some insight on building a 31 ci single intek briggs. I currently have a 31 ci tecumseh that's very well built but I did not build it and I want to go to briggs just for parts availability. So my question is what is the best way to spend 1000 on this 31 briggs

One goal, SO many directions.

Good way to eat up a grand is to improve the pump side. ARC flywheel, crankshaft, rod and B&S Hi-Torque Starter. Not counting squaring up the block, boring cylinder, gasket set and new piston/rings.

Cylinder head and valvetrain is a good way to spend more!

"Well, I'm going cheap and don't want to spend that kind of money."
To that I say, "Well, get comfortable in the back of the pack."

I hope that's not your response to this post, and pardon my cynicism, but that's where it goes most of the time.

Yes, a flathead crank and counterweights can save some dough, they are good crankshafts. But if you don't advance timing a billion degrees BTDC, the ARC crank will get you years of trouble-free service. One less thing to worry about while you begin to invest in other areas of the engine.

Briggs cranks are nowhere near as strong as the Tecumseh crankshafts. Not even a little bit.
And, not that there is need, but there is no billet crank for the Indian out there that I am aware of.

if you have a Tecumseh single it is probably not a 31ci. But what do I know, i'm not an expert on Tecumseh engines like ed and bert are.
