New Iowa Racer
« on: September 19, 2015, 07:46:32 pm »
Hey everbody, new to mower racing and im going to build an IMOW for next season. And just had a couple of questions for the class it self. I have a chassis ready to build but im looking to get a motor, and wanted to know if i could just buy a new motor off the shelf or if  had to use a motor that was original to the chassis. Also is hand throttle the best way to go for running the engine in this class. Thank you in advance,  Mike

Welcome to the wild world of mower racing! You couldn't have picked a better group of folks to race with.

You can run any single cylinder engine, running the original engine that came with the chassis is not required. US rules say "Must be stock, complete, and not to exceed a factory rating of 33 CI." If you like the old flatheads, you can use those too.

I would strongly recommend going to letsmow.com and download yourself a copy of the 2015 rule book, a lot of your questions will be answered there. Yes, the 2015 season is coming to a close, and the new rule book comes out around February (I think), but you still have a close and accurate guideline, especially with IMOW. Their rules don't change much.

Good Luck!

Mike

We run USLMRA rules at Carlsisle.  So Jeff is correct.  Use that rule book.

Do yourself a favor and build a GP instead of a IMOW.  There aren't any IMOW's in Iowa. GP is the same thing just without the final ratio rule.

And yes you can buy a new engine and run it.  Which is a great way to get started in a governed class.

Getting to a race is the best thing you can do.

I won't be there this month.  I'm a farmer.  Harvest will be here soon.  And my engine is at the machine shop getting rebuilt.

Paul, with that "custom" catch can, I would have just ran it. It was billet, yo.
Wait, is plastic technically billet?

Billet of wood, billet of stone, billet of glass...
