The proper way to do it, in my opinion would be to buy a roll of gasket paper, an X-acto knife, and a hammer and just make the gasket. Place the paper on the intake manifold, use the hammer lightly around the edges to get the proper outline(if the edges on the intake are defined enough tapping it with a hammer will cut the paper), then use the X-acto knife to cut the bolt holes and intake runner opening in the gasket and voila, you've made a gasket.

You can use Ultra Blue or Ultra Back Silicone.  Dab a very thin amount on 1 side only.  Once it has set, you can start the engine and spray carb cleaner around the seam to make sure it is sealed.  If the engine revs you have a leak.

Paul's right. As an alternative, I found the Grey silicone from Ford, used specifically for diesel engines, works fantastic. Resistant to synthetic lubricants, so it works on gearboxes and the like too.

How about the stuff used to seal the crank case halfs together on two-stroke engines. It is made to resist gasoline.

My suggestion, don't take them apart. Those intakes are very thin walled, and there is nothing to be gained by separating them. Use a port tool to take out the 2 flat spots in the carb mounting throat, then clean out the flashings on either side of it into each runner. Gasket match the port to head sides, and stay away trom the indentations for the mounting bolts....VERY thin in there!
If you quit when you're behind, you will never win.

There never was a gasket, OE used epoxy.

There is a lot to be gained from opening one up, if for nothing other than to make sure they are free from vacuum leaks.

The poor two-piece intake has gotten a bad rap over the years, but I have found them superior to even the "Big Iron" 16-Horse intake. The Two-piece has fewer bends, and those fewer bends have a more subtle transition. If you know how to play with fuel distribution on a "wet" flow bench, you can unlock it a little, to the point of having to run a leaner jet, which translates to greater efficiency, and port velocity does not become such a huge requirement. On the log-style intakes, you had to have port velocity just to pick the fuel back up once it rounds the bends, so to speak. But if done right, you won't have the inherent over-rich cylinder two problem.

If you've never played with any of that, start with this...tack your gasket onto the block perfectly, separate the intake manifold, bolt the bottom half up, and match the block and manifold to the gasket. Now flip the block over, bolt the top half on and do the same. You can, if you feel you need to, leave a couple of those small screws in place to keep the halves matched, bolt it as an assembly to the block, then remove the other half, but I don't feel that's necessary.
