Are you using flanges or cassettes with your bearings? with flanges, I would use 1/4" for the weldment. With cassettes, the .080 will do.

I am going to use 4 bolt bearing flanges. And I am just going to make my own plates. I have some 3/16 plate but if I need 1/4 I will buy some.

Personally, I would bolt them right to the chassis and call it good.
Back when we used 700's and axles, we would bolt the bearing cassette's right to the chassis. (MTD box frames).

With those, no weldment is needed, just like Ed said, just bolt on square and go.
