You can space it as long as your not over max width.

You can also space it on the outside to put your nut on.  Just so it don't stick past the rim.

I wouldn't trust stock rims.   I've seen even reinforced rims break.

After I took the tires off of them I'm having second thoughts might try to find some steel wheels

Get a set of Kart hubs and used kart wheels.   The hubs you can spend what you want.   The cheap ones are better than stock wheels.  The ones I had on my SP were $20 if I remember and they lasted forever.

Wheels can be found used cheap.   Find a kart shop, they will probably have some laying around or will know of some one who will.

I don't know of any 6" steel wheels that will work on the 3 bolt hubs.

Using a hub and wheel set up is the best way.   That way you can replace each individually if you break or bend one.

I'm going to order some good ones tomorrow.  More I look at it the more I think it's not the safest thing to do

Your lucky that was all that was hurt.  Usually when front wheels come off or brake the mower flips and rolls over the driver.   I've seen a lot of drivers get hurt when front wheels come off.  That is why when I tech I always look at the front end very close.

Keep in mind that the futher you space the wheel from the pivot point on  your spindle, the harder it will be to turn (look up scrub angle)
