My '07 racin mowchine!
« on: February 18, 2007, 12:32:50 am »
Here is the start of my 2007 season mowchine, compliments of my DH of course. ;)  Not sure of the year, but it's a Wizard.  First two pics are of mower as we received it.

Here it is stripped down!

Next two are Ty's handy work on a custom made front axle.

Next two are custom made spindles.  He still has some finishing work to do on them.

New posi rear end with brakes.  He set the brake system up so clutch and brake operate from the same pedal.  He got an awesome deal on the caliper, master and hose assembly... $66.00 + shipping!!  My brake disk was originally a sprocket that he cut out with a plasma torch.  Pretty crafty, eh?

He cut the old clutch/brake pedals off and made new ones.  Old brake pedal now serves as gas pedal!  :woo:

Rear view of axle.

Rolling chassis at 4".  Was originally about 8".

He also remodified the clutch in order to house a larger pulley but has no pics of that yet.  Installation of tranny is next but waiting on a sprocket.  Going to work on finishing up the steering while waiting on the sprocket.  Also has fender, seat & hood fitted but no pics of that yet either.  Will get more pics as it progresses.

this mowchine was inspired from sami's build , but with a few things different .It should be a sweet little mowchine when all completed.

Looking good, but would like a little more info on the "clutch/brake" single pedal layout..

I see the linkage and see the movement, but how do you compensate for the difference in throw for the brake cylinder compared to the distance needed to operate the clutch...

Seems the brake would "bottom out" (limited movement) before the clutch would disengage...or you would have to disengage clutch everytime you wanted to apply even a little brake pressure..??

So "everytime" you enter a corner at speed and tap the brakes you disengage and reengage the clutch .???

Sounds like a lot of unneccessary thrust forces being applied to tranny (motor revs up , clutch engages) just to tap the brakes to set up for a corner...???

I mean it's an OK set up for mowing your lawn,>>>step on brake , disengage clutch and brake engages for complete stop<<<... But on a race track your doing it 20 times on a 10 lapper or 40 times on a 20 lapper...

Unless you don't go into the corner fast enough to need the brakes...???

Another thing to add to this little "discussion," would this type of setup work all right for say an IMOW? since most of the time theyre not "on" the brakes in corners? or am i wrong about how theyre driving in IMOW class?

At IMOW speeds, "most" of the time engine drag is enough to set up or corner...

There have been a few tracks with tight corners that I ran IMOW on, that just a touch here and there were needed, but at that point, just disengaging the clutch could be enough...

Most of the time you want to be "on" the gas and appling force to the ground... keeping the revs up...a touch of independant brakes would be better....

The trouble we had with the combo clutch brake setup was that every time you slow down at speed with the belt slacked off it would throw the belt off, because the transmission starts to push the belt. The separate clutch brake pedal was the answer, the belt stays tight.

Mine had a single clutch/brake pedal and I didn't have the belt falling off.  I had enough belt guards welded in to keep the belt in place.  The problem I see with having separate pedals is locking the back wheels and stalling the motor or roasting the belt.  I know you should push the clutch when coming to a stop, but on a dirt track with a lightweight machine I see the brakes locking up.

the fulcrom ,  it took me three days to get the system to work and work smoothly , doesn't bottom out .I wanted to have individual clutch and brake , but my wife wanted the mowchine set up like what she had before .otherwise , setting up the brakes would of been simple as 1 2 3.

ya the clutch/brake single pedal layout is the way to go that is what I have on my racer half way is clutch all the way is clutch and brake cause u need to push in the clutch to brake anyways make it simpler to drive

I guess I don't understand why you would want to disengage your clutch when hitting the brakes to setup for a corner ?? I very seldom used my clutch to setup for turns , now if you get held up and use it to get a hole shot that's another story .
If you have a decent set of brakes you can adjust them to not lockup tight till the brakes are fully applied .
