Question on CV491s
« on: December 26, 2014, 11:58:52 pm »
Ive got a MTD wannabe race mower Im building and I replaced the busted Briggs single which got killed from 10years of weather abuse with a Kohler CV491s 17.5HP from a John Deere and Im wondering how much I can expect from this engine. Also I removed the governor and it seems to be running lean at higher RPMS, is there anyway to richen it up or do I need a different carb? It has only a idle mixture adjustment. I though maybe running just the header was the problem cause of no back pressure, so I fabbed a whole exhaust system for it but still it bogs out at mid throttle right past around 3900RPMS until 4300 or so. Thanks

How would the lighter flywheel effect the mixture, shouldnt it rev up regardless of the flywheel weight?

Meaning , anytime your going to disconnecting your governor to rev any motor past it's factory spec rpm you should be running a billet flywheel. See if there's a flywheel available for your motor. Look through this section to find places to buy one. Then rev it as high as ya want. If it's bogging out under governored rpm try cleaning carb and make sure no jets are plugged.

Ok. Also what kinda carb could I put on this for more versatility? I can get motorcycle carbs all day any day for around 30bucks, but I dont which one to get. Also are there any issues with Kohler engines like there is with Briggs on the whole non-billet rod breaking thing at higher rpms? I couldnt find any answers on this so Ive been suspecting it was from the stock carbs running lean on the top end causing the engines to overheat. Im asking all this kind cause I cant find jack about Kohler engines. Is it cause they are built stronger the Briggs or whats the deal? I repair riding mowers part-time and all the mowers sitting at my workplaces mower-graveyard all have Briggs engines except for one with a good Kohler engine and a bad tranny.
