Tire Grooving?
« on: December 26, 2014, 06:47:27 pm »
Who has done any tire grooving or sipping to lawn mower tires.  How well did it work, which tire, and what kind of pattern did you cut?

Well I got two of the three covered.

Grooving isn't necessary because that procedure is to help keep tires cool. You'll never get enough heat in them for it to be a problem.

Did a little sipping back in the day and found no difference. Side bite usually isn't an issue. Forward bite is, but that's more a problem with compounding and/or track surface.

Cut tires work great in mud drags.
If your having an issue keeping the mud out of the lugs at race speed, you suffer from lack of torqueitis.
I have no issue showering guys 2-3 places behind me with dirt.

THAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU FAN THE CLUTCH COMING OFF THE CORNER! SO THAT'S WHY BERT DOESN'T GROOVE TIRES, YOU SPRAY EVERYONE BEHIND YOU AND THEY ALL COMPLAINED TO BERT AND HE DOESN'T WANT TO HEAR IT!!
THE REASON I DO ANY GROOVING IS TO PUT A EDGE ON THE TREAD FOR GRIP, AND ONLY WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN ON A HARDER TRACK. JUST REMEMBER THERE IS A TRACTION AND A BRAKING SIDE TO TIRES.

Al, the only time I use the clutch is when I am starting moving, or coming to a stop without crashing.

Belts last longer without clutching, too. If you tried using the clutch on corner exit with Rick James (our engine), it would create smoke similar to a John Force burnout.

Transmissions last longer when you do not clutch starts or restarts too.
