New from Southern Maryland
« on: October 05, 2014, 08:22:27 pm »
Hello everyone, I am new to the forum....just joined a few moments ago.  I have been checking out the forum as a visitor for the past 2-3 weeks and figured it was time to join. This site is great and offers a wealth of knowledge.

I am getting ready to bring home a 2000ish Murray with a 14.5 hp Briggs I/C Quiet motor that my father is giving me.  The mower has not run in several years...so I am unsure at the condition of the motor.  Any insight that can be provided about that particular motor would be great.  I cannot seem to find any info on the I/C series motors and whether or not they make good starting platforms. This will be my first attempt at building a race prepped mower, however,  I am not a stranger to automotive performance.......so I do have mechanical knowledge.

Anyways, I plan to start a build thread once I get the get the mower to my garage and start getting things apart. I will put up some pictures at that time

Take care

They are the base platform that many start with because of their availability. The USLMRA even has a super fast class called FX that this engine will fit in. It should be a model number starting with 28, you can use the model number to find out more about what you need to.

Also go check out Bowles Farm in MD. One of the best tracks in the country.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Thanks for the reply and the info.

As far as Bowles Farm goes, I have been there several times.  Its only about a 30 minute ride from my house.  I have never been there for a mower race, however, I have been there for a tractor pull   :D

Get in touch with me / us  (PM Me) - Mason Dixon Lawn Mower Racing Association
I am in Laurel MD....We are racing this weekend - Sat Upper Marlboro - Rt 3 Crain Hwy Montpelier Farms Corn Maze-Family Venue and Sunday in Burtonsville MD at a Moose Lodge on Rt 198 & Rt 29. Both are grass Road courses.
We have quite few a guys in Southern MD too.

Showing up to a race will answer a million questions. There is great opportunity to meet our racing family this Saturday, Oct 11th.
We will be there from 11am to 2pm only - we are doing an exhibition race - fund raiser for the Upper Marlboro Fire Dept - Rescue Squad. Will be doing some "mock" races and this gig will be rather relaxed - giving us time to talk. Upper Marlboro is not too far from you - straight up rt3.

Sunday we will be a points race - pretty intense, hardcore racing, we have a couple classes where the top three racer are only 10 points apart. GP class in even closer and all eyes are on the top three.

Last race is Oct 25-26 Fawn Grove PA for a HUGE Cancer Benefit fund raiser. Our final race will be early Saturday morning the 25th(Mason Dixon final points race), then directly afterwards - intense racing from guys all over the East Coast, both Saturday and Sunday. This event is open to all racers, all groups.

Flipper,

Thanks for the welcome!  I would like to come out and see the races, unfortunately, this weekend I have a demanding work schedule.  It is on my list to make it to a few races to see how things are done before I enter them myself.

I strongly suggest showing to at least one race(be it this year or next) before you start your build. Again, this will answer many questions before you make costly mistakes.

SoMD you are in a great spot to get started in lawn mower racing. There are several experienced racers in this area. Listen to Flipper and come to a race and talk to some of us. I would suggest talking with some of us and seeing our machines before you start any build. The amount of information you can receive free of charge is worth a lot and will save you time and money!
