I'd use a non-petroleum distillate lubrication on tires because prolonged expossure will cause failure.  Granted, a tire could soak in a mineral oil or diesel fuel overnight and only be softened up, but for mounting the tires to the rim I would use a water-based lube (like wire pulling lube or something) to get them on there.  That way no oil would be left inside the tire, leading to eventual failure.  I would soak the tires in something to soften them only after they're mounted to the wheels.

Murpheys tire soap. I mount 315/80/22.5's by hand all the time. Two bars and a big rubber tipped hammer.

Why not use something really technical in water based lubricants like tire lube!

Technicalities explained... there's more to it than simply a water based lubricant. And, no KY Jelly is not cool for this task according to the tech sheet.

well, as they say, you learn from experience! ky gets sticky after about 15 minuts in the wind, however. i tried that yesterday on my tires, before i was told not to. i wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that it was the warming lube?
