mounting /dismounting tires
« on: February 13, 2007, 03:41:09 pm »
Don't know how many of you dismount/mount your own tires .I changed tires last night had to dismount 4 and mount 2 tires for my wifes new race mowchine that I am currently building .Boy what a pain in the a.. it was even though I was using a mini tire changer from harbor freight .Just wondering what anyone else is doin and if anyone has an easier way of changing tires besides taking it an auto shop . Took me about an hour or so get them changed .

I always have trouble seating all kinds of tires - from my wheelbarrow to my mower - untill I found out you can get the beads seated to the rim so you can inflate the tire by using a strap-wrench ;)  ALSO makes life alot easier.

used wd40 , I tell ya I was still sweaten bullets. It was a work . I'm thinkin it was the type of tire which made it so hard.

seating the tires was the easiest part of changing tires for a change .

See it's all those fancy tools your using...

I break the bead by squeezing ib the big vise, one side then the other...

Then a 1-1/2" pipe in the vice to center it...with a vice  grip clamped on the lower rim edge to keep it from spinning...

Lube with dishsoap (oil is not good for rubber)...

Spin off and back on with an old tire tool (ball on one end, hook on other)..

Heck, even Sami can switch a pair of tires in 15 minutes...

dismount my new tires off of rims that I can't use .the mini tire changer that I use work for sh..,goin to have to make some modifacations to it in order for it to work better than it does .My old tires weren't too bad getting them off.

modifing the tire tool is what needs to be done , there is no hook on the one end , doesn't hook the rim and keeps popping off when trying to mount the tire .

A few tips I have learned thru my experience are:

1) dismounting/mounting- (if it is hot outside, let the tire sit ouside for a while to heat up), the rubber seems to be more flexible (not always possible tho)

2) dismounting/mounting- with or with out tube remove valve stem

3) dismounting-I use a slide hammer with a semi-curved tire end to break the bead

4) dismounting/mounting- I always use a dish soap to make a soapy solution, NEVER NEVER NEVER use an oil based lubricant on tires, it breaks down the rubber

5) dismounting/mounting- motor cycle tire irons work best, (my own opinion) they are thin and short, my set has never broke got them at the local bike shop

6) Sealing the bead, leave the valve stem out, use pleanty of your soapy solution to allow for the bead to slide easily... never use ether, or some other type of flamable solution to seat your bead, find someone with a devise called a cheata. that would be for those of you who don't use tubes... But in lawn mower racing I have found that tubes are essential..

Hope this helps, tires can be difficult, be careful, and most of all have fun..

on section 6 once bead is set get that valvestem back in sorry

Has anyone had problems with the rim slipping inside the tire before?  Just out of curiosity.

haven't seen yet on a lawnmower but I have seen on atv's a few times when ran with tubes inside.everyone usually has the valve core sheared off from rim spinnage , that why I don't recommend tubes on a.t.v's .

Give Don a shout at G-Team, he has a bead lock rim available which would prevent said slippage. Prices aren't really that much higher from what he's said either.

u need 2 screwdrivers, a chisel, and a hammer. Not that hard to do, but it aint no walk in the park either. i use mineral oil as a lubricant, it doesnt eat rubber i think, its actually used as a colon lubricant for people.  :woo:
