Newbie from Michigan
« on: September 18, 2014, 01:11:52 pm »
Hello all,

My name is Mike and I'm from Mid-Michigan. I currently run a screen printing business and work part time at as a maintenance mechanic at a correctional facility. I have been wanting to get into racing mowers for the better part of the past 5 years but have not pushed myself to fabricating my own. I recently acquired a complete GP class mower in efforts of getting my feet wet in the sport before I invest into building my own. I have zero acquaintances that participate or let alone have even seen a mower race, so other than the people I meet here on heymow I am going in alone. I am having a bit of difficulty finding races or even tracks for that matter in my general area. So hopefully I can uncover some information on local events here.

Nice to meet you all.

WELCOME! I'M FROM THE DAVISON AREA! THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF TRACKS AROUND RIGHT NOW. FOR VARIOUS REASONS A COUPLE HAVE DISBANDED. THE ONLY TWO I KNOW OF IS THE "THUMB AREA MOWER RACERS" AND ANOTHER DOWN BY LANSING "ROUGH RIDERS" [I THINK]. MOST OF THE TIME THEY RUN ON SATURDAY, WITH ONCE AND A WHILE A SUNDAY THROWN IN FOR GOOD MEASURE. A TRACK CALLED SPARTA RUNS A "USLRA" NATIONAL EVENT ONCE A YEAR. THERE IS ALOT OF HELP ON HERE JUST READ AND LOOK AROUND. TO SEARCH A QUESTION THE SEARCH BUTTON ON THE LEFT WORKS THE BEST. HAPPY READING! ANY MORE QUESTIONS JUST ASK!

I am with he Potterville Sod Slingers, formerly the rough riders. We race on saturdays and still have two races left this season, Saturday 9/20/14 and Saturday 10/04/14 we race at alliance lake in Potterville mi gates open i think at noon and racing at 3.  The USLMRA race for Huntington's disease, in Sparta, MI ran back in July, it will be the last race there. There are also gonna be some indoor races this winter i know one is scheduled now with more to come i hope. I am in Kalamazoo and we have i think six or seven racers now in the Kalamazoo area.

Thanks for the responses guys. I wasn't aware of races in the thumb. I'll have to find out where the track is. I usually attend the races in hastings which where I was first intrigued by mowers but I'm not sure I'll be able to make it this year due to a wedding. I'm roughly 15 miles west of birchrun so Sparta and badaxe are roughly the same drive. I have some upgrades i want to do to my mower befor i race. Mostly steering stuff. Looking forward to making a new home here.

Al, ever think you're the reason they disbanded?

Don't ask Big Al to go down there. He's got a bad "track" record.

I race in the Thumb Mowers group. We have no more races planed for this year but January 3rd we plan on doing some ice racing at the Lucky Thumb track in Deford. Weather permitting of course.
"There are three easy ways of losing money - racing is the quickest, women the most pleasant, and farming the most certain."

Well I got two of the three covered.
