thumb throttle
« on: July 25, 2014, 08:19:32 am »
My buddy, crew chief, shadow, whatever you want to call him, has MS. He can move his right arm, hand and leg, but has no feeling in them, he has driven my mower around and has 2 problems with it. Can't clutch it as my clutch is on right side, & has trouble releasing throttle. We have decided to build him a mower, and he is not planning to try to race it unless he gets along better than he thinks he will and I'm hoping this will happen. Since he gets along fine with my brake we are putting his clutch pedal on left side, with a hand brake lever on steering wheel for left hand. I am wondering has anybody ran an atv type thumb throttle on steering wheel? I think this would be the answer for him as he rides his atv all the time and even thogh we can't feel it this is more natural to him. Thanks for the imput.

What he said. All my mowers have thumb throttles. Will not go back !
Some clubs allow brute clutches and chain drives, so just thumb the throttle and hold on !   :woo:

Just give him a centrifugal clutch. If anyone has a problem with that they are heartless and don't belong in mower racing.
Just my opinion ;)

Little known factoid about myself, my left thumb is shorter than my right thumb.
Neither of which come into play when I'm tossing up my victory shocker.

We would allow the same in our club (I'm assuming  ;) ) but use as low  of a engagement as possible. It's one thing to allow something that is otherwise not allowed for this reason but to use the allowance for a performance gain would not garner much support.
