Need help Identifying Transmission
« on: June 05, 2014, 09:41:44 am »
I'm sorry for asking such an elementary question.  But can some on identify this transmission?  This is NOT my mower but one I have found for sale.  The owner told me the transmission "slips" so I asked him to send me a picture of the id tag/sticker so I could research but the MFG. Topec threw me a little.

It looks like the 700 replacements that guys are running now. I have seen cases that look just like this one that guys have gotten from Ron's rocket parts. I know Ron changes a lot inside them but the case looks identical.

shift keys

Agree on the shift keys.  may even be a broken pulley/keyway/input gear?

The manufacturer (TOPEC) is an unknown to me, but they are sold under the "Pro Gear" name.  You can find them on Ebay.

The 7502B was, as stated, a knockoff of the Peerless 700-008.  All T7502B's gears are powdered metal.  The shift keys and shafts are interchangeable with other models, BUT BE WARNED! You must change your idler and rear sprocket carrier alignment to run these, approximately 1/8".  Now, please don't let me confuse you with this information.  I have never run a true Peerless transmission, only EC's trannys and these soft-toothed objects. And when switching from an EC transmission to a ProGear transmission, I had to make the adjustments.  In other words, I do not know if switching from a true Peerless to one of these units will require adjustments.

Having said all that, you CAN install true Peerless parts into these transmissions.  But I would definitely recommend replacing the input gears with steel pieces at the very least.  Talking EC distributing for more information would be a good idea.

I bought 2 of these exact transmissions off Ebay once.  Installed them on my G/P.  They each lasted only 8-10 races before breaking.  Others may have run them with better luck, but I found them, well, painful is a good word to use.

First off let me say, thanks to all our Veterans out there.  Today is June 6, 2014.  70th anniversary of D-Day, thank God for freedom we have today.  Second, thank you very much, Jeff for your good info.  So bottom line, it's a ticking time bomb, if I understand correctly.  If I do pick this mower up, then would you recommend me going ahead and picking up another tranny (like from EC) and have it ready for the day it blows?

1. Be grateful for what freedom we have left, and enjoy it while it lasts.

2. That is a good plan.  EC's transmissions are all steel, have the input lip seal and you don't have to clean any crap out of the case.

Another piece of advice, EC's Tranny case threads are metric M8-1.25 size.  Length will be determined by your set-up, but get as much thread into the case as you can without bottoming out.

That transmission you have will only have an o-ring under the bottom of it, not a seal. Easy fix.  Either SKF seal p/n 6105, or National seal p/n 340387.

Well I believe I may have figured it out or at least have another possibility.  It could have come from EC.  I purchased the mower and placed an order for a new "Peerless" 700.  This is what I found in the box.

You are absolutely correct. I was tooling around in the garage last weekend, and found the top of an old EC transmission, and had the exact tag!!  I make mistakes, sure, but to make one and blast it out worldwide is rather embarrassing...Just take the information I gave you and throw most of it away.

The ProGear transmissions are cheap peerless knock-offs, at least for what I have seen.  The Topec unit you have is most likely an EC unit.  I am very sorry to have misled you.  Now back under my rock I go...

Jeff, your help WAS very helpful and I am thankful you gave it.  Very glad you told me about the metric bolts.  If you haven't I would have more than likely forced a standard bolt in and messed the threads up.  Thanks again for your help.
