will this ragb work??
« on: June 05, 2014, 08:32:36 pm »
I found this ragb on eBay. I was thinking about using it. It says it's rated at 32hp and 1800 rpm. Will it hold up at 3.times the rpm and 1/3 the power??? Or should I just get the one from ec carbs that could break from just the power I'm looking for reliability. Machine is an mtd 80s central park. Has a 12hp flathead with just no governor. Exhaust air filter billet rod and flywheel. I'm wanting to change from peerless 600 to ragb and star clutch. Any help??

SPECIFICATIONS
Ratio 1:1
Input Power
40 HP intermittent
32 HP continuous
Input Speed 1800 RPM max.
Input Shaft 1" diam. x 2-1/2" w/1/4" keyway
Output Shaft 1" diam. x 2-1/4" w/1/4" keyway
Mount 4 1/4" square 3/8" tapped mounting holes
Size 5-7/8" x 6-1/4" x 4-1/8"

Engineers have a tendency to be overly conservative when it comes to bearing speeds, so this may be the limiting factor.

Also, since not a single other racer has replied indicates not a single other racer has used one.  YOU just might get to be that guy who buys one, takes it apart, checks bearing specs and gear mesh, builds a means of retaining it in a chassis, and then share the results with the community!!!

What's an extra 40 bucks for what racers are already using from EC.

Does anybody ever break the ragb from ec carbs? I just was looking at heavier alternatives. This box has 1" shafts and just could be more reliable. Or maybe not. I just want explore all my options

Like George says, "If you ain't breakin' nothin', you ain't learnin' nothin"!

I know Peerless made a bit heavier one, cast iron housing. Internals are all the same, however.  But I would think the cast iron housing would have a better chance of staying true when heated, as aluminum expands at three times the rate of iron.

However, and to be honest, I have not yet spun my RAGB yet, as I still haven't finished my FX/S build.  Therefore I don't know what breaks in these units. The big weakness I see is the miter gears, in that they have a rather limited tooth contact pattern. If you were to find a gearbox that had helical gears which would spread the load across more teeth, I would think you would have a stronger piece.  And if that means I would have to cut a hole to let a larger gearbox fit, then so be it.

I might get this one it's rated for 20hp and 3600 rpm. Which if I under drive it like I would it would prolly only spin 4000.

Shaun , that flathead your building won't break EC's unit.
