Rings
« on: May 22, 2014, 10:20:56 pm »
How long should it take for rings to break on a new built v twin? I have low compression and compression is different on each cylinder( my compression gage is old too, but still different compressions?)
Maybe a little over a hour on this motor

With piston ring technology these days, rings should seat almost immediately.  There are exceptions, such as chrome rings.  I am assuming you are using factory rings?  As long as you aren't breaking in an engine with synthetic oil, they should be good right off the bat.  After a couple of runs, you can then switch to synthetic oil.

Next question(s): did you just re-ring the engine with no other mods?  I am curious as to the shape of the cylinders.  if they aren't true, then you might have a seating/sealing problem.  If you bored out the cylinders that shouldn't be an issue. Did you measure the bores for taper and out-of-round? If you did, and they are straight then I would be looking at valve sealing.  Do you have the ability to check cylinder leakage? That way you can test it without taking it all apart again.

Another simpler thought might be to verify your valve lash isn't too tight?

I would put more money on either valves not seating properly, broken ring on instillation or head gasket problems. Rings today beak in fast and seal well even in bad bores.

Another thing to consider, what did you hone your cylinder walls to before putting the new rings in.

I figured that if they weren't steel, or have a metal ring of some sort around the cylinder that the gaskets would just blow out

I would venture a guess that it is either a warped/improperly surfaced head or deck, or a torque/install issue, as we have used those gaskets for years without issue.
