Fuel Pump Use (not for its intended use)
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:03:53 pm »
I'm not speaking of any engine in particular here so I thought I'd post this in the coffee shop. Has anyone ever tried using a Mikuni vacuum operated fuel pump as oil pump? I've seen instances where the fuel pump would pump engine oil due to other engine problems and of coarse it was only a short period. My question would be the longetivity of the pump due to oil temps? If you have tried it, what were your results? Looking for any info on this. Thanks!

I should specified this but I didn't. I should have said use the fuel pump as an oil transfer pump rather than an oil pump itself.

The oil "Hydraulics" the pump, too viscous to pump.

I know of several guys that use a holley style electric fuel pump for an oil pump, and it worked pretty well. They are legal to use in most groups since you are not using it as a fuel pump.

My machinist runs one as a water pump for his Odyssey 2-stroke.  I'll ask him and get back to you.

we are running a vacum pump as an oil pump on Jakes stroker motor as the rod has no slinger. It pumps oil from a drain up to top of motor and into the block thru govner rod hole and sprays on rod. Been this way over a year no problems. its not a mikuni but it is a vacum pump and a lil bigger than a walbro.

Gonna be transferring engine oil to the oil pump itself. No more than 10w-30.

George what weight of oil?

Rember the discussions about a "Clean Vacuum" signal? Vacuun from anywhere other than the intake would make the pump stop pumping? I think I read this post wrong, you have a "Clean" signal, but you are going to use it as a way to move oil around?

If you are doing this already George, it must work? I bought a small oil punp similar to what the NASCAR guys use on the rear end to oil one of my projects, never used it. I know Wildman Kenny uses a electric fuel pump on one of his single cyl mowers, been on there quite some time. (He also has no slinger).

That's correct Tommy. I will use the vacuum side of the pump witj a clean pulse. Only change I will do is where the fuel inlet and outlet is on the pump, I will use oil instead of gas.

I did this to a Tecumseh. Star layer on its side.  Just used fuel lines to attached to the squirters.  We used cool power medium oil.
