Valve Issue?
« on: March 15, 2014, 08:21:32 pm »
Hi guys, not sure if i have done something wrong or not,,,23hp vanguard-16hp crank, arc long rods with 40ci intek flat top pistons, cheetha cam, double valve springs with billet retainers, billet flywheel, head ported and oversize ss valves,2bbl carb, question is when i set my valve lash at tdc on compression stroke to recommeded .004 all looks fine, but when i rotate motor over by hand i notice that at certain points the valves are "REALLY" loose,,is this normal or am i missing something?

if its more than the spec then you didn't find tdc I usually roll the motor over til it starts to open the exhaust valve then I set the intake and do the same in reverse for the exhaust. may not be technically right but it has worked for me

You have to find the heel of the cam, that is the point opposite of max lift, sometimes it is not 190 degrees from that point. Stick your feeler gauge under the rocker and keep turning the crank through two revolutions (cam is half speed remember?) and do your finial adjustment where you have the most clearence.
