cam question
« on: February 04, 2014, 10:49:04 am »
ok, I bought a used aftermarket cam, and there is no passage drilled from the block assembly end, to the check ball on the pan end....no oil passage through the cam . this does not seem right to me at all, which is why I am asking if anyone else has ever run into this with an aftermarket cam grind on a briggs blank w/out compression release balls. I believe I will be drilling it through, as no hole, means no oil supply would reach the sidecover side of the cam. am I thinking correctly? thanks, Jim.

Jim
It is basically a way to strengthen the cam from all the spring pressure we require for the rollers and high RPM's.  I have ran these types of cams for years with not one cam issue.  My billet cams are completely closed.  If you drill the hole you may lose cam integrity strength.  Most guys I know now all fill in the bottom at the least.  Of course you may want some advice from an expert which I am far from.
Good luck Jim.  8)

Jim if its the cam you got it from me, it is ready to install like it is. Enough oil will get to that side of the cam anyway from the the moving parts in the engine. And like Jason said, the Billet cams are solid too and we've never had any issues with lubrication.

I thought the oil was feed through the cam up into top bearing ,down to rods?? I just got one of these cams too and it's solid.how does it feed oil to rods? Thanks . Does it flow through lower bearing up through crank, rods , upper bearing them come down to cam? Just wondering the fluid flow.

The oil passage is in the block and goes to the cam and the top bearing, and from the top bearing down through the crank to the rods. The cam being solid has nothing to do with the oil that travels to the rods. A solid cam would only prevent oil from traveling through the center of the cam to the pan/sidecover side only.
