Head Shaving
« on: January 05, 2014, 06:13:10 pm »
What's a reasonable amount to shave the head on a ohv single without having to change pushrod length?

If you are running the stock rockers you can "make" the stock pushrods work with about as much as you want to shave the head.

It isn't 100% right, but it will work.

But you can't run double springs with the stock rockers.

If your running roller rockers, spend the money for the correct push rods.

I ran double springs no problem it was crank that snapped after being in 3 race engines and compression it had caused it

Crank Breaking has nothing to do with valve springs, rocker arms, or push rods.

Compression didn't break it either.    RPM's, too much timing and crank flex is what causes the crank to break.

I ran my FX engine with the weak OHV crank for 4 years without breakage.   Spun it 6800 all the time.  Had .125 off the head.  Double springs with roller rockers.   BUT I supported the crank and set my timing with a timing light.

So .060 would be reasonable with a stock cam and shimmed springs. Would just give it a little more bite?

Yep.   As long as your going to run stock rockers.    It is going to throw you geometry out of whack.  But I know there are several out running that way.

Be sure to run steel push rods on both valves.   Stock there is 1 steel and 1 aluminum.

Wouldn't making different length push rods fix the geometry?
