Twin for Ariens rear engine riding mower

Ariens RM1332 rear engine rider in nice shape.

The engine burn a lot of oil.  I should tear it down and rebuild the brigs diamond IC 13HP but the fool in me wants a twin.  There is not enough room between the seat and the back to mount a V-twin so I was thinking that maybe an briggs opposed twin (oppy?) might.  I prefer not to stretch the body or hang the engine out the back.  Do not want it to look butchered.

Question 1: Is it reasonable to think one could locate one and rebuild a briggs opposed twin.   Any idea on costs.

Questions 2: How much motor can one use with the friction drive?

Net says Briggs made over 4 million opposed twins and production stopped in 2003.    I love the sound of these engines.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUCx3Hp50tA

There is a guy running one of those in BP.  He turned the v twin sideways.  Stuck the carb off the left side I believe.  He runs an 820 Transaxle, not the friction drive.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Yep, John Vinka has it, and he is about as nuts as they come, but he makes it fast! The friction drive isn't something you want to use.

The friction drive is fine if your only cutting grass. Snapper used them with v twin's in RER's for years and they held up fine.

Been thinking about it.   Found an 14hp opposed twin at the http://www.mowergraveyard.com/complete-engines-c-21/briggs-stratton-14-hp-opposed-twin-cylinder-engine-400707-p-11500.html for $120+$86.56 shipping and a member here has offered me one for less.  From what you can see the mower graveyard has nice looking tin if nothing else.

Found a photo of John Vinka's Aerins RER

Need to do some thinking.

I am going to open up the original 13hp diamond IC and if it does not require too much work rebuild it using a billet dog bone.   If that works out I am going to look for a tractor with a twin that I can hot rod.

If the engine is not worth repairing I will continue looking at an opposed twin for it.
