Mikuni Carb Questions
« on: November 19, 2013, 10:35:53 pm »
For those that may be a little more familiar with the Mikuni carbs, is there an advantage to a spigot mount versus a rigid mounting carb. I realize the spigot is probably a little easier to work with but is there a downfall to it? Also flat slide versus round slide, advantages and disadvantages?

no difference in the mounting. The flat slides have more responce, no real disadvantage other than the roundys are cheaper and easier to locate in the used market.

Anybody ever tried the UFO's in these on the mowers?  I had some in my snowmobile
a few years back and they worked well once you got them dialed in.
HUGE difference in throttle response, really strong low and midrange,
no noticeable gain on top.

They claim that the ufo will make a round slide preform like a flat.  On some charts they flowed  better in some areas.  There is a lot of tuning that can go into these carbs.  Keep in mind that most round slides were for 2 strokes and making them run on a 4 stroke takes some trying.  I would say that the ufo is worth it.  My pilot jets are half the size they once were.

I prefer the spigot mount because of vibration dampening advantage with the flange adaptor, plus machining manifolds become lots cheaper.

TM carbs, as far as I'm concerned, are more efficient then the old VM round slides, but they are more expensive.

Buy you a Sudco book and you will see the difference the TM has for 4-Stroke engines.

If you are buying a carb, don't go to that old round slide stuff!  I would strongly recommend having a look at the the Mikuni SBN38 butterfly carb, the sbn's  are the most responsive carbs i've used. If you insist on a slide carb, the Keihn PWK/Airstriker is a fine piece!

If you already have a round slide, the ufo an option for sure. Mostly the 2 cycle carbs are jetted way bigger due to major hp difference per cc versus the 4 stroke.
