Horizontal 42 opposed... Worth anything?
« on: November 03, 2013, 07:38:00 pm »
While racing at nationals in Iowa this past year, I saw some guy with a mean looking Horizontal opposed on an fxs.  He was having issues with it at the time, but had glowing revues for it's performance when it was behaving.  I came across a stock one recently, and I could probably get it.  I have seen only 2 of these so far, and I was wondering are they desirable for racing?  Is this worth snagging up?  Also did they ever make a pressure lube version of this horizontal version?

It is worth it if you want to run in a class that needs it. Or use it in tractor pulling.
Or on a tractor that needs a repower. They did make pressure lubed versions.

You can run an opposed in fxs? I never read the rules for that class, thought it was singles only.

Thanks guys.  I have a vertical 42 pressure lube sitting in the garage with a scratched crank where the lower main seals rides, so it could donate some pressure lube components if it would swap.  I am guessing I would need to relocate the oil pick up screen and use the pan, crank and cam out of the vertical to convert it?  maybe come up with some sort of "sleeve n seal"  like in automotive apps to give the crank a new surface for the seal to ride on.

THERE IS ENOUGH DIFFERENCE IN THE HORIZONTAL AND THE VERTICAL THAT YOU MAY WANT TO           INVESTAGATE WHAT IT TAKES FIRST. FIRST I WOULD CHECK OUT THE BRIGGS OPPY MANUAL, THEY PICTURE THE DIFFERANCE.

With a horizontal version, the pan area becomes the side cover and the side cover becomes the pan.  The pressure lube versions were made up to 1987 I think, so that makes them pretty rare.  The rifle-drilled cam will swap.  as far as the block, you will no longer have a dipstick tube hole unless your block has the plastic screw cap on top, but most pans had a plug high enough on the side where you can add enough oil until it spills out.  Also, the oil pump pickup will have to be drilled out in the block, but there are ways around that too.  :D
