I don't even like the look of that set-up. I like turning a steering wheel, like a real mower, or car. if I wanted to use a steering wheel-bar, I would put a steering wheel on a 4 wheeler. just another "clever" way for someone to run what they want, it is still a "handlebar" set-up, with a steering wheel mounted on it. :twocents:

The reason for the wheel in rules is for safety, no blunt points to the body incase of an accident, and for the appearance of a mower. In my opinion mike, and all the others using it are very creative to find a way to fit the rules, and also fit what works for them. I've seen these in action and I think it's very impressive! I've never tried it, but I'd jump at the chance to!! Even if it didn't work for me, I would not slam or cut on the guys that have it. It's safe, and it looks original, and it works for them. Thumbs up guys!

Its a sweet setup. As far as it looking wrong or not like a mower... It looks pretty much the same from the spectator point of view. It isnt at all hard to make either. When I get back in the game it will have this set up. You cant tell the difference unless you are really paying attention to their arms that they are turning it as oppose to the push pull...

I would like to know how it works, when used on a machine that has the steering column at the same angle it was from the factory, as the one pictured looks to be on a column that is straight up and down...illegal unless that is the original angle. seems like at the correct angle, it would be really angled.

There are a couple ways you can do this. Powermadd makes a system similar to this for snowmobile that you can weld right onto the steering stem. That way the steering wheel can swivel whatever way you want it and the stem goes through the stock locations.... Mike Collins runs a supermod anyway so that doesnt matter.

ARMA's rules do not specify that the steering column remain at the factory angle, therefore the mowers mentioned are NOT illegal.

I say if it works for you, is safe, and looks clean and close to "factory", run it.  Not a fit for me personally cause I don't think it has enough leverage and the ratio looks to quick.  I would not object to try it and make a definative answer at some point. :dunno:

Centrifugal clutches, Hoosier tires, kart seats..... yeah these are definitely things you see on mowers every day.....just saying. It is a steering wheel..... and my first riding mower I ever mowed grass with had handlebars. So tell me more about authenticity.

I've never seen any tech official at any race in any association ever MEASURING the angle of a steering shaft. If you run a prepared chassis...with improved steering...often the steering CAN NOT be in the original location or angle. If a steering set up is improved...as it should...and MUST be for racing...there is a certain amount of latitude allowed to builders. Guys that moan and complain and snipe about things like this just don't have enough to do. Todays mowers are about as (stock) as a NASCAR stock car. As speeds have....and will continue to escalate...steering and running gear in particular HAVE to move away from stock type setups and componants to have a reasonable safety factor. I cringe when I go to local tracks somewhere and I see original equipment steering wheels..."reinforced" steel wheels and the like. Just a few weeks ago I saw a fellow trying to race with a frontaxle still pivoting!  Don't condem anyone trying to engineer a new type setup...even if it may be different than what may be the standard set up.
