Steel ring gear for billet flywheel.
« on: September 26, 2013, 01:06:48 pm »
model 28/31/33 briggs wheel.I use the cheap hd starter and i,ve heard the pitch of the starter gear is a little off.Is there anyone running the steel ring with cheap hd starter with better succsess than the billet one ??It starts 90 % of the time perfect but 10 % not good sounding.I got 8 events out of it and don't think i will make through to many more races.Guess i could rotate the ring gear??Tanks for any input.Does anyone know if you can buy the billet flywheel with the steel ring install for same price??

I,ve shimed to get the starter gear as deep as possiable with no bind while turning the flywheel by hand.shimed and reshimed. It;s like 10% of the time they just don;t line up. The two button system sounds good but i would have to watch the gear to make sure its up in the teeth before i engage. Thanks

same here never a problem. don't want it tight....engage the starter gear to the ring, and use a straightened regular size paperclip as a spacer between the two gears.

. the starter is straight and the tooth contact is even up and down.Maybe i got a faulty starter gear?starter was 88 bucks shipped to canada brand new from jacks parts in the usa.I guess if you guy,s aren;t haveing problems i;m doing somthing wrong. :bash: :bash:.It,s like the two gears are pefectly lined up after shuting off and butting up against each other  10% of the time.Jim do you mean side to side play 1 paper clip or 1 paper clip deep in the tooth groove with the teeth all the way in bottoming on the paper clip.First one right?

sounds like your starter is binding up somehow. check it for any bad bearings or excessive play in the drive shaft, or drive gear.

Get the steel one. As soon as I can I will do so. I've been through three ring gears with two different starters. I have shimmed the started till I went cross eyed! I also ran two buttons, bumped the first a few times to "prime" it (basically shoved the bendix into the gear of the flywheel,) then hit the "start" switch.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!
