Have You Seen These?
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:59:22 am »
I got a Northern Tool catalog in the mail yesterday, thought there might be something interesting here.  Naturally I know very little about Kohler engines, but this caught my eye as a possible alternative to the Predator/Honda Clone....the model no. is PA-CH440-3011.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200578312_200578312?cm_mmc=Google-pla-_-Engines-_-Kohler%20Horizontal%20Engines-_-29605&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=29605&gclid=CMCd2Kq9tLkCFepZ7AodLlcA8A

Looks like they are on sale for a very reasonable price of $349.

Is this a common enough engine as far as parts are concerned?  What bullet-proofing mods can be had for one of these?

Agreed, I've been looking around and haven't seen any "shiny" parts for them either, or at least so far...

I just bought one to run my grain auger.   Nice engine.  Nice price.   Mine was more than that because I got electric start and the big charging system.  And I wanted to buy from my local guy for warranty purposes.

Guess I'd have to question the legality of using one.  Not sure if it ever came on a mower.

Awesome engine though.   For what I'm using it for!!!

Those engines are LCT 208cc engines...if they are the same ones sold at my local Northern Tool place. Easy starting..iron liner...forged crank. They run good.

YamaKohler...very interesting.  Considering the growing usage of the Predator/Honda clone engines used in FX/S, would this be a viable option for FX/S as well?

Still needs to be a mower engine.

I believe the clones are allowed because they are exact copies if the Honda.   Which came on a mower.
Making tech easier so they don't have to determine if the engine is a true Honda or a copy.

Paul, I'm a play-by-the-rules kind of guy.  I don't have to worry, and victory has meaning.  If it's not legal, it's not legal.  I was hoping that wouldn't be an issue, but it is what it is.

I know that Jeff!!!   Ultimately it lies with the rule committee.

Personally I wish they would allow all small engines in the FX classes.  And put a cubic inch limit on them.

I was just sharing my experience.

It really dosnt matter...no one ever checks cubic inches at the racetrack anyway. On some mowers its a half a day job pulling a head off a v twin.  I know they have expensive test equipment like NASCAR uses but who could afford one? Be pretty simple pulling heads off flatheads but it would cause a riot. Cubes are nice but reliability suffers in a lot of cases. Mower racers are funny about their engines. I've seen guys fighting an engine that just won't run for an entire season...and longer. Kart guys...if it won't run the first or maybe the second time...it goes back in the trailer...probably forever.
