Vanny compression release ball removal?
« on: August 08, 2013, 09:18:31 pm »
How do I remove the compression release balls from a 16hp Vanguard cam? I removed the weight/spring, and took out the pin. The ball farthest from the cam gear is easy to get out. How do I get the other ball and inner shaft out?  And do I leave the large ball/spring in the end of the cam. Just install a hollow tube for oiling?
Thanks.
As you were... I got the inner parts out. The whole thing gets pushed out the end with the larger ball. The large ball is held in with a light-press retaining ring. It's inder spring pressure, so don't lose the parts.
Now... do I put the large ball/spring back in the end of the cam or not?

Maybe you could share more specifically how you did it, so when others come looking they can find such info.

OK, Here goes...

1. Cam assembly

2. Remove Spring

3. Drill Rivet Head from front side

4. Picture of rivet from back side

5. Use a punch to tap the rivet out. Remove the weight

6. Remove roll pin

7. Remove actuator pin

8. Insert screwdriver/punch into back side of cam. Push inner shaft toward front of cam

9. Remove screwdriver/punch. Rear ball should come out

10. Insert screwdriver/punch into rear of cam and gently tap the large ball/retainer/spring/washer/inner shaft/2nd decompression ball out of the front end of the cam. Assembly is spring loaded so make sure you capture the parts.

11. Reinstall large ball/retainer/spring/washer into front end of cam

12. Picture of parts removed.

A hollow tube must be installed inside the cam for proper lubrication.

Higher compression on start up I would assume.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Put a hollow steel tube inside the cam,it keeps the parts of the cam from falling into the connecting rods and blowing out a big hole in the side of the block,we broke several cams at 11000 to 12000 rpm
