Thanks for the link.   My chassis has a peerless 920 transaxle.  Is this a good tranny to build or should i look or a 700 ?

I live in west central Minnesota , Granite falls, about 120 miles west of Twin Cities.  nobody around here races, or builds chassis.    Anyone close that I could drop in on and see first hand how to build a chassis?

oldiron, I live in Glyndon, MN and I run a John Deere STX38.

We race at family owned tracks, have about 10 mowers that regularly show up to our events.

I can send you some pics and information if you need

I have made close to 10 of the STX series and now have moved away from this one piece – fenderdeck-frame design.
The small wheelbase makes them very difficult to handle at higher speeds. The worst part is, since the frame fenderdeck is one piece,
if you have one good, nasty “get off”, it’s a complete loss. The hood is close to $300.00 nowadays.

Yes, use the 700 and you will have to fabricate a tranny plate. The only way I could get them to steer is use the L100 or the 120-140-160-180 series steering(Push-Pull).  This was hours and hours of extensive fabrication.....as was the whole STX project. I have moved away from the STX series and now use the L100 series. The the older 120,140,160,180’s  are serious heavy bulldogs but hold up great(Like Grubb diggers 180) The L100 series is significantly easier to work on and handle about 40% better.(And lighter)

What ever you do as far as the front axle, Make sure you make it removable like my L100 Builds, so you can explore different options.

There are a handful of guys out there who have made the STX's work. I salute them.
After I lost two STX hoods, I moved on to something more affordable. (that was well over $800.00 plus paint)

MTD's are a good choice, very light and plenty of room to work on......I just did not want to see you make the costly mistakes I made.
STX's are great for IMOW - J/P...and that's about it. You are limited to a max 6" front drive pulley due to the frame rails. Everything is very tight under it's belly...a lot of structural cutting the get the belt to flow without hitting something. But it can be done.

There are many others that are good, viable candidates for racers,  just consider staying away from the stamped steel fender deck types.
I myself, prefer the John Deere L100 series(All the same)....they can easily be made completely modular. Mine come apart in seconds for service.

Best of luck on your build.

Ok i just scored two free mowers a Sabre 1542HS good motor bad hydro, and an MTD bad tranny that has been sitting, so motor may be bad two.  Is the sabre the same basic design as the old JD STX, looks to be.  I have not yet see the MTD.   I plan on picking up oth this weekend and will pick and choose best chassis and motor.  I can't wait to get started.

I am currently building an stx 30 but I am cutting the frame rails out and making my own si I can basically remove the body panel whenever I want and I also plan to make it two inches longer to try helping the handling of the mower.
