I made a front axle for my mower that technically went against my local rules of "one piece front axle" since it was 4 bars of 1/4" steel welded in a box.  That :censored: was the strongest thing ever, but they were like "you can run this this year, but not next."  I'd be a little scared of 1/8" honestly.  The front axle is probably the last thing I would want to have bend in an accidental collision.  I wrecked my mower the first time when I was practicing.  I was going through a turn at high speed, and my 10 year old plastic stock steering wheel snapped off and left the hub on the shaft.  Because I was in a turn I crawled that thing up a tree.  My axle was fine, but I tore both front tires to shreds and busted my hood.  Good times

10) Front axle and steering may be reinforced, substituted or fabricated. In the case of racer-fabricated axles, these will be subject to the judgment of the Technical Inspector as to their apparent safety for racing. Aluminum may not be used as the material for the one piece axle

I maybe miss reading this also but to me that would mean it would have to be a solid piece.
I wasn't bashing your build eather just would hate to see you build it and not get to race it , the best thing to do would be to contact Jim Witt the head tech inspector and ask .

I was either going to build a one piece axle or get one from Acme. Here's a dumb question: will the IMOW axle he sells work fine for faster speeds? I wasn't sure since IMOW is for people that race close to stock- right? His looks pretty beefy and simple.I was going to use wheels with ball bearings and drill in some grease fittings. That and it'll weld right in place on my frame. It's that or just get some square tubing with 1/4" and weld on some spindles.

Speed wise they will hold up fine... the difference is in the ride height...

If your leaving the transaxle in the "stock" location and just going with shorter tire the IMOW axle is the one to use...

If you are lowering the rear axle and frame to miminum ground clearance the prepared axle is the one to use...

Allen,
Didn't see that!  I guess I have read the rules too many times!  Need to brush up on them as I am going to help with tech here in Iowa.

Thanks for the info Squid,
I was about to get that one. It is cheaper as well, which is always good for me.

definition: fab·ri·cate  (fbr-kt)
tr.v. fab·ri·cat·ed, fab·ri·cat·ing, fab·ri·cates
1. To make; create.
2. To construct by combining or assembling diverse, typically standardized parts: fabricate small boats.
so what's wrong with the channel iron type of construction?????

Instead of welding 2 channels together to make a box it should be one rectangular piece that was welded from the factory.

I love it, a racer with ribbed front tires. I've never seen a ribbed front tire look so good, careful sometimes they don't like to bite, although sometimes turf savers don't like to bite either. We are asking these to do what they were not designed to do. Thats what makes it interesting I guess. Nice skins :coolpics:

in the debate of weather 2 peaces of C channel will be aloud for a front axle. since they are welded together wouldent it be considered one peace.in that case the stock front end isin't even one peace it;s even 2 peaces of C channel welded together to.

by the way does no elece ever reply on my build topic or is it just me. I love to here your guies's opiononson stuff.
