Unknown Kawasaki Cam
« on: June 16, 2013, 05:11:23 pm »
I have a problem - I bought a cam off that was advertised to be out of a FC540V. I had the person send it directly to Tim Isky to regrind. I just got around to install it and low and behold it is not for a 540. The actual cam gear is smaller as is the cam ends. The entire cam looks smaller and I have no idea what it is for. How can I at least figure out what it is?

Maybe a kawi 420 cam?  Does the cam gear look the same as the 540 just smaller?

Probably a 420 or a 460 cam. Can you post a picture with some dimensions - info?
I think I have all three, we may be able to make a determination that way. Some 420 cams were plastic/nylon.

ok. Descripttion - doesn't appear to have had any decompressor. The cam appears to measure (using tape) around 6" in length (give or take .075"). The diameter of the gear is about 4.437". Thickness of gear about 0.437". Cam top end diameter aprox 0.628" and length top - 0.600" and drive end diameter 0.785", length overall 0.855" with about 0.215" of that (the pump drive) 0.705" in diameter. Well I just (as I was finishing up this post) went on ebay to search for Kawasaki cams and I realized quickly that only the 460 has a oil pump drive on the cam like a briggs. The others are gear driven, So I am pretty sure it's a FB460V cam I have with a mild grind on it.....380 lift, 256 degrees at 0.050 lift and 108 lobe center. At least I believe it's only the 460 with the slotted pump drive.

I think you are correct. I had a FB460 cam done from Precision and it sounds very similar

I opened up a FB460V and it is the same cam. No idea how it was confused with the 540 but I now have a 460 Isky ground cam for sale....(see for sale section)
