bent axle
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:44:22 am »
I am having a problem with bending rear axles. I have a transaxle with a one piece axle going all the way thru. I have support pillow blocks about three inches out from the end of case and my rims are rite up to bearings. I am running the stock steel rims that are reinforced. My problem is that I am bending axles rite after the bearing. It is a 3/4 axle because that is what fits in the case. How can I get it from not bending without running a liv
e axle and changing alot of stuff?

What are you using for the MTL. for the axle. We use 4140 steel and have had good success. We still have bent it but that was do to someone running into the side of the mower.  Mind you this is on a SS machine.

Not saying what your running is not the right thing to run ..I choose to just run the best right off the bat 1-1/4 axle adjustable cassettes..700 Tran and everything else ..that way I have no worries

That stuff is soft    It is going to bend.  You need something bigger or stronger.

I've never had good luck with 3/4" stuff.

What George and Paul says. Get it off the ground high enough or get hit, it's trailer time.

If you run your wheels close to your bearings the axle will bend quite easily.  If you run some distance between the wheels and bearings this will allow some flex in the axle. Centreless ground 4140 is your best bet for axle material.
If it has blades I'm not interested.
