MTD step-thru C/P
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:56:53 pm »
well after 2 years running my FXT, i need to get out of the kart seat for my back's sake.....sooo, i have decided to make a C/P for this year, and hopefully my back will thank me for sitting on a mower instead of in it...
i started with a Montgomery Wards (MTD) step-thru style chassis:

here is the bracing at the front

bracing at the rear, and the tranny plate

more rear pics, top of mower, and bracing to tranny plate

front axle beam

engine plate....i cut out the sheet metal all the way across, then welded in a 1/4" plate.

cut the sheet metal, and dropped the battery down into the frame

where the fuel tank will go

tranny tucked under the fender as much as possible, i will still have to make a small cover for it

overall view, i still have not put my grill/hood mounts on yet....more pics after i get those on

i will not have to clearance this rear fender section, i will just have to cut and modify the bottom part to look better at the running boards....i could have used the original rear fender section, however, this one has no shifter holes in them, and the seat pan well area is deeper, allowing me to keep the seat as low as possible, and at the same time, not have to do any sort of modifications to clear the tires.

it will be getting a built 33 AVS, and use a 700 peerless. i am using 13x6.50-6 turfmasters on 6x7.25" rims on the rear ( local club rules allow them) and the fronts are 13x5-6 turf tech II's ( same tread design as turfmasters) on 6x6 rims on the front. i am really pleased with the way the whole mowchine is coming together so far, and i will post more pics as i make progress, hopefully soon.

Really looks good Jim. Q: why the 1/4 in. plate up front for the motor. First time I have seen that done.  Already looks fast. Josh better go big .  :woo:

Looks good so far.  I like the lowered battery tray, and especially the engine plate.

1/4 engine plate is so it don't bend and so it dont oval the engine bolt holes...I think

I don't think making your own engine plate is entirely legal is it?

I know why he did it but I'm keeping my mouth shut! It's just a guess anyway!!!
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

Just the part about crank passing through the original clearance hole but I guess it depends on how ya look at that too. Not my worries, just an inquiry

the hole in the plate is within the perimeter of the original 5" engine hole....to me, that's legal.

I'm not sure that the plate is entirely legal being you cut out the original frame.

I know you can add to the stock frame.  Don't think you can cut it out and replace it.

Better check with the national tech guys.

I did it years ago on my sportsman chassis a cub cadet walk thu. They made me put the oorignal plate back before I could race it. I too do not see anything wrong with it. That section of the frame spider webs with cracks on just the grass cutter seen them even break in half. I am with you Jim I like it and feel it good, but just passing along my experiance years ago.

thanks for the compliments guys. as far as USLMRA tech goes....if they ever come to the west coast for an actual points series that matters, then they can tell me yes or no. and if it's no , i will gladly load my mower back up, and just race the local tracks that have no issue with something that is "little potato's" as far as i am concerned...like i mentioned earlier, it also uses 6" rear tires, so i am not looking to run on a national level anyway.

You can play with the ARMA boys with the 6" rears... looks good though, I like the pass through mowers but man they scare me. Seems like it takes ALOT of work to make them stiff.

Tim, i have built both the step-thru, and box style frames, and to be quite honest, i have had excellent results with the step-thru chassis, and with around 1/2 of the bracing used on a box chassis. i think allot has to do with how you do the bracing. there are some ARMA clubs around, but none here in Oregon, unfortunately. i will mainly be racing at our home track in Estacada, and across the mountain in Wamic, both are great tracks, and great people with lots of good racing, and good friends to be had ;)
