OHV rod bolts & balance weights
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:24:30 pm »
28N707-1131-E Motor
Are the connecting rod bolts on this motor allen head, torks? What size and is there a special tool designed for this. Also doesn,t look like enough room to get a torque wrench in there for reassembly.
This motor has counterbalance weights without the dog bone. Is this what Briggs calls AVS?
The diagram I down loaded  from mymowerparts.com (28N707-28N799) shows the dog bone type of balancing. Where can I find the correct parts diagram for this motor?                                                Help and thanks!

If it's a ARC rod it's 12 point, the dog bone is used with the syncro weight. If it has brass plates, these replace the syncro.

The engine serial no. you give is for a flathead engine. If you use a number like 282HO7-0334 E1 it will show a 28 cu in AVS engine. The rod bolts are Torx around T40 but not sure on this. You will need the correct bit to torque the rod bolts and its best to remove the camshaft to do this. You will need to turn the engine to a suitable spot to fit your torque wrench in to tighten the bolts.
If it has blades I'm not interested.

This is very interesting. Thinking I might have read the model number incorrectly, mistakeing the H for an N. It is definately a N. A OHV motor pulled directly from a rider, that has a identification tag that sez it is a flathead! I will get the correct diagram. Thanks for the info.

Looks like a regular old syncro balance motor to me.

I have come to the conclusion that Briggs uses a lot of freedom on their Model # plates.
Here is what my model number shows me:
28N707-1131-E -1  An overhead valve motor with dog bone syncro-balance, oil pump and filter
After complete disasembly, this is what I found.  Overhead valve, AVS, no oil filter, and it has a compression release. I am trying to order a standard ring kit and gasket kit and want to be sure I use the right part numbers.

I have found where fan covers or rocker covers have been swapped off other engines. Makes it tricky when trying to order parts.
If it has blades I'm not interested.

The covers for an AVS will fit the older series engines and vice versa.
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!
